A Journey Rooted in Heritage
The inspiration for Graincut Empire began in Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Bavaria. During a visit to this historic city, which is known for its medieval architecture, our founder Torben Hansen was captivated by the beauty and functionality of the ancient end-grain wooden floors found throughout the city. This discovery sparked the idea to create a modern interpretation of this centuries-old craft. By blending traditional techniques with cutting-edge engineering, Schotten & Hansen has crafted a flooring solution that pays homage to the past while meeting the demands of contemporary living.
A New Era of Craftsmanship and Elegance
Graincut Empire is the first end-grain wood flooring collection to maintain its durability in changing climates, thanks to a special treatment to the ash wood top layer and its multi-layered, tongue-and-groove construction. This allows the collection to feature exceptionally large Roman patterns. Crafted from horizontally sawn ash wood, the cut surfaces showcase stunning annual rings, while natural cracks enhance its unique character. All this comes with the renowned Schotten & Hansen surface attributes: a stunning depth of colour, regenerable with our care products without the need for sanding, and breathable, promoting a healthy indoor climate.
Three distinct formats are derived from the tree slices, allowing for resource-saving versatility and combinations. While the arrangement may appear random at first glance, it adheres to a sophisticated geometric system. The Roman bond laying method, utilized since antiquity, highlights the elegance of our design.
The collection comes in three colours: a cool light colour tone emphasising the tactile growth rings; a medium colour tone creating a warm earthy feel in homes both old and new; and a dark colour tone, dramatically exposing the end-grain markings as the light changes throughout the day.
We are the only manufacturer in the world to offer end-grain parquet profiled in a multilayer construction with an open-pore surface. This unique innovation is stabilized in dimensions through a specialized process, combining modern engineering with traditional techniques to deliver a product that is both durable and elegant.
